Southwest Veterans Chamber of Commerce continued its annual tradition of partnering with the Arizona Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (AZMOAA) for its annual Army-Navy Game FUNdraiser at Famous 48 in Scottsdale.

Its 35 participants witnessed the greatest Naval ambush since the Battle of Midway as the Middies took control early and never looked back. Army had the better record, was ranked 16th in the NCAA, and was heavily favored by all sources. But no one told the Navy coaches and players! Navy walked away with a lopsided 31-13 win and the 2024 Commander in Chief’s Trophy.

In addition to the 35 attendees, 39 others participated in the FUNdraising game pool. We set a new record by selling seven game boards and gave away 28 $50 cash prizes totaling $1,400! Additionally, at the end of the 4th Quarter, the lucky winner of 50% of the raffle ticket sales received $168. In addition to the $50 square winners, two raffle prizes were also given away at the end of each quarter and halftime.

The food was great, the camaraderie was great, and—depending for whom you were rooting—the game was great. But the bottom line is that our mission of “putting the FUN in FUNDraising” was highly successful. SWVCC and AZMOAA each received $1,068 after payouts and expenses.

Although Navy won this great rivalry game in an upset, both teams, coaches, and fans showed the character and discipline for which our service academies are known. Unlike the debacle following the Michigan upset over Ohio State, all of us are proud of both teams as they showed why this game is referred to as “America’s Game.”

Networking 101

By Carl Ulbrich – Jireh Communications

Networking is an inexpensive way of searching for customers, suppliers and people who can help grow your business.  Networking is all about building relationships, building trust and giving and receiving referrals.  Here are some helpful ways to accelerate your success in networking:

1) First impressions.  The old adage you can’t judge a book by its cover doesn’t work in making first impressions.  When meeting someone for the first time you have three seconds to make that first impression.  Within the first three seconds even if it is just a glance you are evaluated.  The thought process goes like this:

  • Do you appear to be of equal business or social status? You may be considered for further conservation.
  • Do you appear to be of a higher business or social status? You could be looked up as a valuable contact.
  • Do you appear to be of lower business or social status? You will most likely be looked down upon and kept at a distance.

Let’s take this a step further.  Each morning you take time to get ready for the day; you comb your hair, put on professional attire and so on.  Basically, you understand the importance of your looks in making that positive first impression.  Don’t forget the first impression of your marketing materials.  Does the quality and look of your business card, brochure etc., reflect your business. Or did you print it off your laser printer on the perforated stock from Office Max.  Spend a few more dollars to have your marketing materials look professional and create that positive first impression which will increase your opportunity for business.

2) WIIFM (What’s In It For Me) Let’s face it we are in a WIIFM society.  People don’t really care about your products and service unless they have a need or want you can meet.  With this in mind don’t try to sell your product or service with everyone you talk to.  Take the position of how can you help them.  Ask about their business, what are good leads for them etc.  Then when you are asked about your business you will have an understanding about their needs and can focus on how your organization can meet those needs – but do it briefly.

 3) Be prepared.  All too often many people who share their 30 second commercial, or as some call it your elevator speech, do what is called a show up and throw up.  They don’t give any prior thought of what they’re going to say and it sounds and leaves a negative impression.  Focus on one area or product you offer.  Remember WIIFM.  What need or want does the overall audience have and how can you meet it. Give the name of your company, your name and sit down.  Keep your “commercial” short and simple. The goal of the 30 second commercial is for people to ask for your business card.

4) Don’t Give Up.  Getting referrals from networking groups takes time.  Don’t expect to walk into your first meeting and walk away with a ton of business.  In fact don’t expect to get any business for a couple of months.  Studies have shown that the first year you receive a very small percentage of referrals.  The second year will approximately double the first, and after the third year and beyond really jumps.   Networking is extremely effective if you work it.  For many people networking is their primary method of advertising especially in the service industries.

Most people who join a leads group for the first time are nervous.  But it can be fun.  You can make some really good friends.  These same friends are excellent resources for business, mainly because they tell others about your company.

Think of leads groups as an extension of your sales force without having to pay salaries and commissions.
We all know that the best method of advertising is word of mouth.

Don’t Forget to Put a “Memorial” in your Memorial Day Weekend

Another Memorial Day weekend is here. If foreigners or aliens who knew nothing of our Memorial Day were to arrive in the US this week, they would probably get the impression that Memorial Day is about travel, cookouts, and great sales at our stores and online. Sadly, for too many Americans, they would be right.

Memorial Day is a tradition honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their Country, dating back to our post-Civil War era. Over time, however, there seems to be less and less “Memorial” in Memorial Day. Many parents will recognize the old saying, “It’s 11:00—do you know where your children are?” We have an updated question for parents: “It’s Memorial Day—do your children know what it’s really about?

So, among your busy travel, events, and family parties, don’t forget to include the “Memorial” in your Memorial Day. One great and enjoyable way to do this—and you can do it with family and friends– is to watch PBS’s annual Memorial Day Concert on Sunday May 26th at 8:00 pm (Eastern).  https://www.pbs.org/national-memorial-day-concert/

Finally, for those who have lost a family member or loved one while serving their Country, everyday is Memorial Day. Let us also not forget those families on this day that is so meaningful to them.

Southwest Veterans Foundation Awards a $2,500 Veteran Suicide Prevention Grant To America’s Mighty Warriors

The Southwest Veterans Foundation (SWVF) awarded a $2,500 Veteran Suicide Prevention Grant to America’s Mighty Warriors (AMW) at the annual Marc Lee’s Birthday Fundraising Bash on April 6th at the Scottsdale Gun Club. Marc was the first Navy SEAL killed in Iraq during combat in Ramadi on August 2, 2006. The keynote speaker was Kevin Lacz, a Navy SEAL medic who valiantly tried to save Marc’s life, and who trained actor Bradley Cooper for his portrayal of Chris Kyle in Amerian Sniper.  At Cooper’s urging, Kevin played himself in the movie.

Tom Sheets presents $2,500 grant to “Momma Lee.”

America’s Mighty Warriors is a non-profit organization founded by Marc’s mother, Debbie Lee, and “is dedicated to raising awareness of the selfless sacrifices our troops and their families make for the freedoms we enjoy every day.” Known affectionately by her Navy SEAL family and other supporters as “Momma Lee,” Debbie is a tireless worker and advocate for our Veterans and their families. She thanked the SWVF for their ongoing support of such an important mission.

SWVF and AMW have partnered to support Veteran Suicide Prevention and numerous specific cases of Veterans in need of financial support to fund Hyperbarci Oxygen Therapy Treatments. To learn more about AMW please visit their website at https://americasmightywarriors.org/_1/.

If you want to support the SWVF’s Veteran Suicide Prevention Program you can donate at https://swvcc.org/savealife/ or by calling 606.677.2961. Your donations, no matter how small, enable the SWVF to provide grants to organizations like AMW.

8th Annual Patriots Ball

This years theme is about honoring the families of those who have given their service for they also served and sacrificed. We are also honoring a corporate advocate and small business owner who is making a positive impact in our community. Through your generous support, veterans, disabled veterans and their family members will receive essential needs, educational support, business support and much deserved recognition of their sacrifice.

The Patriots Shield Award is presented to businesses making outstanding contributions to the Veteran community. These contributions include encouraging and assisting Veteran-owned businesses, doing business with Veteran-owned businesses, hiring Veterans and family members, supporting Veteran programs and needs in the community, and providing financial sponsorship to others who are supporting Veterans and their families. This year there will be two awards; one for large businesses and one for small businesses.

Lincoln Award

The Lincoln Award is presented to the veterans advocacy organization making outstanding contributions to the support of veterans and families in Arizona. Award recipients actively support veterans’ families through programs that assist in treatment of mental/physical ailments, employment support, housing and family support. In addition, they have demonstrated a leadership role in providing specific programs and services to veterans and their families.

Mark Ashby Memorial Award

The Mark Ashby Memorial Service Award is presented annually to a non-veteran member of the community who has provided extraordinary support to veterans and their families. The award was established in memory of former Southwest Veterans Chamber of Commerce chapter president, Mark Ashby. Mark was not a veteran, but his actions served as an inspiration to others. Recipients of this award distinguish themselves through service and programs that have demonstrated tangible results and outcomes to Veteran families in need.
